The young people forced to live in aged care homes are more likely to be violent than their peers at school but the gap is much smaller when compared with adults in educational settings. And while the number of violent offenders in young care is significantly higher than adults in the educational settings, those aged 13-29 years in aged care are less likely to be violent compared with adults.

This finding highlights how educational attainment influences the propensity to take risks, particularly in those on the periphery of the labour market. Youth in education tend to be more disciplined, more cautious, more self-reliant and more focused on working hard to get ahead. They are more likely to follow established career paths rather than jump to new opportunities as young people who might not otherwise make it into higher education. In doing so, they can reduce the risk of a violent outburst if they are not sufficiently careful when taking part in such activities.

"A key finding of this study is that young people in the care sector are much more likely to develop violent tendencies than their peers. This seems to be because their parents' job responsibilities place more of an obligation on them to contribute to the wellbeing of their communities and wider society than in the larger workforce", writes Professor David Whitehouse, Head of the Department of Political Science at the University of Bath.

Professor Whitehouse adds: "I think it's important to recognise that violent behaviour will develop if a child is left without guidance, or if a young person experiences a major setback in their career. I agree with the authors that this is the case for most young people but the research raises other important questions about the impact of education on family and community stability."

Professor Whitehouse explains that while there is a significant gap between the overall crime rate for young people and that for adults and young people, both genders in both educational and employment environments tend to have substantially less violent offending behaviour.

The findings are consistent with a 2014 study which found the prevalence of violent offending among young people living with parents in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland was higher than other adult social groups.

The authors highlight the important role that education can play for young people when it comes to controlling their crime. However, they suggest that more research is needed in areas such as school settings.

The authors hope their findings will help guide policy to promote the health and well-being of young people and prevent their violent behaviour and make it easier for them to become productive members of society.
